The need for businesses to have a comprehensive employee health and wellbeing programme is widely understood. Especially now, as the COVID-19 pandemic has brought into focus and undoubtably exacerbated the challenges employee mental health faces.
The efforts made by HR teams and people managers over this time – to protect the wellbeing of their workforces – have been amazing (woop woop!) with Simply Health’s Health and Wellbeing At Work Report 2021 report finding a brilliant 87% of respondents taking additional measures to support employee health and wellbeing in response to the pandemic.
But employee wellbeing must remain on the agenda, beyond the urgent need for the reasonable adjustments that COVID-19 created.
The same report found that mental illness and stress are within the top three causes of long-term absence from work, with 45% of respondents stating that their mental health had worsened during the past year (with a comparative 8% stating it had improved). These figures demonstrate the on-going need to protect, support and invest in employee health.
